Sell Your Digital Products

One of the best ways to make money online is to sell digital products, either your own or those of others. In this article I’ll discuss how you can sell your own digital products to grow your online business.

Step One: Create a Digital Product

Although many people believe otherwise, creating your digital products is fairly easy. You just need to have a topic that will be of interest to potential buyers and then put together some information about that topic in written, audio or video format.

To find a profitable topic, you need to do keyword research. This topic could be an article all its own, so I’ll only mention the basics here. You want to find a keyword phrase of two or more words that gets at least 50 searches a day. If the words “how to” “buy” or “review” are in that keyword phrase, so much the better. There are plenty of tools online for you do to keyword research, so just look for them with your favorite search engine.

Once you’ve found your topic, pull together some information about it. You can do this from your own experience, research or even find some experts on the topic and interview them. Record the interview using one of the many no cost teleconference services and you automatically have an audio product. Get the audio transcribed and you can create a written product. Add some images, create a slide show and you can have a video product, too. Again, these topic could each be several articles by themselves, so I don’t have the space to go into much more detail here.

Step Two: Create a Sales Page

Now that you have your product, you need to be able to explain to folks why they should buy it. You do this with a sales page. Ideally, you’ll create this sales page on your own mini-website, but if you don’t have hosting, you can always start out creating a sales page using one of the free blogging sites, such as Blogger or LiveJournal. Basically, you create one post and that’s your sales page.

Your sales copy should following this basic formula:

1. Share the problem your product solves, illustrate how painful this problem and be.

2. Explain how your product solves these problems.

To make your sales copy stronger, you can add in an explanation of common solutions to the problem and then why yours is different and better.

There is plenty of information on the Internet about how to write good sales copy, so read up. But this simple formula will at least get you started.

Step Three: Set Up the Sales Process

There are many ways you can do this, but before you start, think about whether or not you’re going to stop at just one or two products or are going to continue to grow your inventory of digital products.

The simplest way is to just create a “buy now” button through a payment processor such as PayPal. If you want to have an affiliate program attached to the product so that others can market your product and make a commission, then you can go one step up and set up your product with ClickBank or PayDotCom.

Both these methods work well if you are only selling one or two products. However, if you are going to sell several products … especially if one customer would conceivably want to purchase more than one at a time … you’ll want to invest in a digital shopping cart. A digital shopping cart lets you set up multiple products in one system and empowers customers to place several products in a virtual shopping basket for purchase at one time. In addition, eCommerce software protects your downloadable products from cyber thieves, so that only paying customers gain access to the files.

In fact, download protection, although possible without a shopping cart, is probably the most compelling reason to invest in eCommerce software. If too many non-paying “customers” get access to your digital products, the value of your product is reduced and you can stand to loose a lot of money. Protecting your download individually can be time-consuming process that is easy to get wrong. Digital shopping cart software does this for you in very simple steps.

Step Four: Market Your Product

Now that your product is created and ready for people to buy, you need to get the word out and sell your digital products. There are way too many ways to market your product than I have time to cover in this article. But so you’ll have some idea of what methods to research, here are the most common methods:

  • Article Marketing: writing articles about the topic of your product and posting them to article directories with a link to your sales page.
  • Relationship Marketing: building a list of prospects and creating a relationship with them so they are more likely to buy what you promote.
  • Pay Per Click Advertising: posting short advertisements online that promote your product.

Challenges to Creating Your Very Own Digital Product

There is no disputing that digital products are enjoying an all-time popularity level. This is because they are convenient to download for the buyer and easy to create and store for the marketer. Products such as eBooks have resurfaced especially because of the advent of digital e-readers like Kindle Fire, Nook, Cruz and iPad. Marketers who design and create these products have been enjoying a great deal of success and will most likely continue doing so for the foreseeable future. But when attempting to create your own digital product, what are the challenges that you must overcome?

So you’ve decided that other than being an affiliate marketer, you want to create your own product and sell it under your own terms. But where do you start? How do you know what is selling and what is not? Many product-creation beginners get stuck here. After all, there are hundreds of thousands of new digital products out there. Product creation involves ideas, brainstorming, and extensive research in order to know what products are trending and how to get them created and marketed to the right audience.

There are very few digital products which do not involve their own eBook. Even with videos, an eBook product or a sales page pitch will be required. This may also mean a product review or press release and all this involves writing. Many marketers are not good writers, indeed many of us and this poses a formidable challenge to anyone wanting to generate their own product digitally. Some say that this issue can easily be correctly by simply outsourcing article creation. This is true and has worked for many, but good writers especially those who are reliable are in desperately short supply.

A large percentage that is enjoyed by those that have created highly successful digital products has come from packaging. Presentation is extremely important when selling products digitally online. We are living in an age where computers, phones and eReaders are equipped with highly powerful graphics cards which render graphics in stunning color. That means that the average Internet surfer now expects products that are packaged in stunning graphical presentation. If you want to succeed in creating your own product that attracts the masses and causes them to whip out their credit card, you want to make sure that it is visually appealing.

Sales page

This really refers to website development and this is another area where many marketers are not skilled in. Selling your digital products involves putting up a sales page with a compelling sales pitch and then having the actual sales page site created and uploaded.

5 Ideas For Digital Products To Sell Online

Digital products are the quickest, easiest and most profitable products to create. A digital product is something that a customer can download instantaneously to their computer when they buy it. It can be a report, eBook, video series, online tutorial or even a membership website.

The greatest advantage when you create digital products to sell online is that once you have created them, you can sell them time and time again. In order to find new ideas for digital products, you don’t have to reinvent the wheel. You just have to uncover unique ways to make it roll better.

1. Ask Your Customers

How do your customers like your current products? Is there something that would like to see more of? Send out simple online survey to the people on your database. Ask them what their current problems are and where they are struggling. You’ll probably see one or two common themes cropping up in the answers. Use that information as your guide for creating and selling a new digital product.

2. Convert Physical Products Into Digital Products

Are there ways to convert one or more of your physical products into a digital offering. For example, if you sell fashion accessories, could you create a video course on make up tips? Or, if you sell fitness equipment, could you create an eBook on weight loss? How can you streamline your product or a service using digital media?

3. Take A Look At Your Competitors

Look into other businesses in your niche and see what they are doing to promote their business. What digital products do they offer? What do their audience like most about their products or services? How can you apply those likes to your products or services?

4. Use Social Media

Social media marketing can expose your business to an entire new audience. Create a free eBook or report that provides value and distribute it on social media and ask people for their comments. As you get comments you’ll see what questions come up and you can create a follow up version with more details for people to buy.

5. Interview An Expert

You don’t have to be an expert in your chosen niche to create a digital product. But experts can be found and you’ll know who they are. Ask them if they would be prepared to be interviewed about a particular issue in your industry. Tell them that you want to create a digital product (eBook, video, report etc) from those interviews. The advantage to the expert will be the exposure that they will get from being included in your product. The advantage to you is that people in your niche will want to know what the experts have to say. It’s a win-win!

Benefits of Digital Products for Buyers and Sellers

Digitization and the introduction of digital products have had a very big impact on the way we lead our lives. The massive increase in the demand and use of digital items like computers and software has paved way for the creation of a completely new market that is profitable for both the sellers as well as the buyers. The following are some of the benefits of these digital items that are valid for buyers and sellers alike.

Automated Business

These products are mostly sold online and thus, they do not require a warehouse to store them. For the sellers, it means that they are able to save up storage costs, which is among the biggest concerns in selling physical products. Since the storage costs are close to none, the digital products’ seller is able to offer his products for a much lesser price than that offered by a physical products’ seller, thus increasing his chances of getting more customers. As for the buyers, the availability of the products online means that they do not have to go to the shops to buy them, but they simply have to order them online and they will be made available to them as downloads if it is software programs or will be shipped to them directly to their homes if it is some sort of computer accessory.

International Access

One of the best advantages that the digital products business has brought to the sellers is international access. With internet being the primary mode of business, a seller of digital items can reach out beyond the physical boundaries of his country and can sell his products to the people living in other countries of the world. Since he does not need to set up a shop in a different country to start his business there, a seller of digital items can use just his website to expand his business to an international level. From buyers’ point of view, international access is one of the biggest positive features of the digital items business. The buyers no longer have to wait for the opening of a new brand’s shop in their country before they are able to buy its products. They just have to log onto the website of the digital products’ manufacturer and get their orders sent to them online.

Freedom is also one of the benefits that the digital products business has offered to both the customers and the sellers. For the customers, buying digital items provides them the freedom of choice. They are able to choose their product without having to worry about the time spent in the process and also conveniently from their homes. Moreover, the customers are free to shop for these products from anywhere in the world without restrictions. As for the sellers, digital products provide them the freedom to set up the business the way they want. They do not have to conform to the standards that are set for the physical products’ business. Thus, they are capable of expressing themselves in a better manner than the physical product sellers.

Keeping the above-mentioned benefits in mind, it is safe to say that the digital products are proving to be extremely beneficial not only for the sellers, but also for the customers.
